Although the exact cause of AML is unknown, it has been determined that environmental factors such as radiation and benzene are linked to the disease. Acute myelogenous leukemia has many other names, such as acute myeloblastic leukemia, acute myelocytic leukemia and acute nonlymphocytic leukemia. It is not contagious or inhereted; the disease develops when an immature cell in the bone marrow defects, so the body does not produce enough blood cells. Symptoms of AML include:

• fatigue
• heavy breathing
• pale complexion
• lack of clotting; free-bleeding
• easy bruising
• the occurence of small spots on the skin
• more infections, i.e. more frequent sore throats
• bone or joint pain
• mild fever

If these symptoms appear in a person exposed to Benzene who is concerned about AML, a blood test may be administered.
