Public Citizen is a national, non-profit consumer advocacy organization. Ever since it was founded in 1971, the organization has worked diligently to represent consumer interests. Public Citizen works with all branches of the American government to insure that necessary reform occurs to best assist the interests of the consumer.
Officially, Public Citizen struggles for openness and democratic accountability in the American government; for the rights of consumers to seek compensation in courts; for clean, safe, and sustainable energy sources; for social and economic justice in trade policies; for strong health, safety, and environmental protections; and for safe, effective, and affordable prescription drugs and health care. The six divisions and two state offices succeed in fulfilling these goals. In order to maintain fierce independence, Public Citizen never accepts funds from corporations, professional associations, or from the government.
