State Bar of Texas

In the State of Texas, many people are injured because of the negligence, recklessness, or intentional misconduct of an individual or company. These people have the opportunity to file a personal injury lawsuit with the help of a lawyer in their state. Unfortunately, not all people that call themselves lawyers are reputable or able to properly launch a lawsuit. Membership in the State Bar of Texas is the reassurance needed to insure that an individual is qualified to present a court case in front of Texas courts.

The State Bar of Texas is an organization that represents legal professionals in the state of Texas. The mission of the State Bar of Texas is to support the administration of the legal system, assure all citizens equal access to justice, foster high standards of ethical conduct for lawyers, support and provide services to its members, enable its members to better serve their clients and the public, and educate the public about the rule of law.

In 1882, the ancestor for the current Bar was established. Today, the Bar is broken into sections and committees that efficiently and effectively fulfill the purposes of the association. Sections are comprised of lawyers who practice within the same field, such as personal injury law. Membership in a section allows a lawyer to gain maximum career potential, express ideas, and strengthen the legal profession in Texas. Committees are volunteer groups that focus on reforming one area of Texas law. Interested lawyers can be elected to serve on a committee for a period of three years. All lawyers in the state are required to be members of the state bar.

Admission into the Texas Bar is stringent. Every potential lawyer must complete a series of rigorous tests to prove that they are competent to practice law in the state of Texas. This admissions process includes a passing score on the state bar exam, completing a minimum requirement of legal education (usually seven years beyond high school), and proving that an applicant has the professional aptitude to practice law. The process ensures that professionals that are admitted into the bar are reputable and competent in order to best serve the citizens of Texas.
