The State of Maine Board of Bar Examiners is the regulatory body in Maine that is responsible for the admission of lawyers into the bar. Stringent requirements must be met for admittance. Potential lawyers must pass the State bar Exam, a Multi-state bar exam, and complete legal education at a credited school. The application process is comprised of several parts. A prospective lawyer must first request an application. Then the application must be completed with scores for the exams, certificates of education, fees, references, certificates of good standing, and results of the Muitistate professional Responsibility Examination included. The State Bar Exam is only administered twice a year, and a passing score must be obtained before a lawyer can practice law in the state of Maine. The State of Maine Board of Bar Examiners is comprised of seven lawyers and two members of the public appointed by the Governor of Maine for five-year terms.
